Tan Time

 

My rabbits seem to be always looking away from me when I try to take pictures of them so I decided to draw a fun design using their inspiration. I really enjoyed the play of light and shadow in this one. 

I am asked all the time if rabbits actually look like this.  Yes they do.  This is a Tan.  It's a small domestic rabbit originating in England.  Her name is "Listen".  Her coloration makes her a black Tan.

Starting off the year with a new portrait.  I used a watercolor wash for the foundation of the background.  Instead of a flat pigment, a fabulous spontaneous reaction happens when using granulating pigments. One never knows what is going to come out of granulated pigments and it's always interesting.  The detail was added with colored pencil.  The size of this piece is 8" x 8".  While small, its presentation on a cradled board commands attention.

Solo Show

Winter show at the Oregon Society of Artists

Winter Solstice

I walked outside and had a wow moment at sunrise on the Winter Solstice. The sun is at it's lowest creating a surreal dark drama.  The river was smooth as glass so the reflections from the trees across the river were visible in the water.

This piece was created using 100% colored pencil in order for it to meet the requirements for the 2015 CPSA International show.  I don't know whether or not I will enter this piece in that show but I decided to adjust my techniques to give me that option.  For the underlayment I created a pallet grinding water soluble pencils, then wetted the pigment to paint the foundation that is under the drawing.

This is an unusual play of warm greys and cool greys to create the illusion of distance and depth with a touch of color in the background to set up a subtle yet unmistakable visual drama in the composition.    

 

Why I like working with detail

It's like meditating.  

 

Creating the tapestry of detail is good for the heart and soul.
